Tommy McFadden, sadly passed away on June 2nd 2022. He will be greatly missed by all at Brunswick Table Tennis Club where Tommy had been a member for many years. Table Tennis was a large part of Tommy’s life. He started playing at a young age and played regularly until shortly before his death. Tommy competed for the club in the West of Scotland Table Tennis League until January 2022. The photo above is from one of his last games for the club against Glasgow South. The list of Tommy’s achievements whilst at Brunswick included West of Scotland player of the year and helping the A team gain promotion to division 1. Tommy also played regularly in other table tennis circles including veterans competitions. As a qualified table tennis coach he played almost daily, helping to run over 50’s and a Parkinson’s session around the city. He was a regular at the Brunswick Club practice venue at the Leisuredrome where he was ever willing to coach and practice with all members of the club. His contribution to table tennis, not only at Brunswick but throughout the West of Scotland will be sorely missed.

I always remember my first night at the club (and sport in general) and Tommy (amongst a couple of people - Andi Hart) welcomed me. I would have been around 10 or so at the time and Brunswick certainly wouldn’t be deemed as a junior club. Tommy no less spent a good bit of time with me introducing me to it. It wasn’t till years later when I started playing in the league, I realised how good he was and how little fuss he caused. He hit with anyone. Apart from this smile, his edge comment, I’ll always look back joyfully on him and laugh to myself when getting the ball after missing a shot thinking to myself Tommy would have got that before me (even if had meant running round the table). RIP Tommy, a true gent.

As Liam so rightly said, Tommy was a guy who would take you for a hit whether it was your first night, or you were a seasoned pro. His enthusiasm was infectious, and he was always at something to try and catch you out - edge of otherwise. He may have been Wee Tommy by name, but his stature was anything but small. You will be very much missed my friend, but I'm so glad to have known you. You brought joy to many within the table tennis world - and beyond. Comments are closed.
